Move One Way or the Other

God ROCKS!

I love how He times everything perfectly.

Take my Chronological Bible Study and on Ch 9 of “The Fire of Delayed Answers” by Bob Sorge.

Sorge doesn’t hold back. In this chapter, he talks about how we can have a heart to please God, yet we can completely miss His best for our lives. We can say we put Him first, but our actions in times of trial (and blessings) show our true selfish intentions.

Sorge even goes so far as to say that today’s church isn’t as concerned with future generations as it should be.

“The leaven of our culture has infiltrated the attitudes of the church. Just one symptom is the constant struggle so many churches face in trying to recruit teachers to teach children’s classes. We carry a greater passion for our personal comfort and conveniences than for raising up today’s’ children into tomorrow’s prophets.” (pg 146)

Now let’s look at Haggi 1:3-11 NIV (emphasis mine)

 “Then the word of the Lord came by Haggai the prophet, saying, Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, and this temple to lie in ruins? Now therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts: “Consider your ways!
“You have sown much, and bring in little;
You eat, but do not have enough;
You drink, but you are not filled with drink;
You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm;
And he who earns wages,
Earns wages to put into a bag with holes.”
 Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Consider your ways!  Go up to the mountains and bring wood and build the temple, that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified,” says the Lord. You looked for much, but indeed it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why?” says the Lord of hosts. “Because of My house that is in ruins, while every one of you runs to his own house. Therefore the heavens above you withhold the dew, and the earth withholds its fruit.  For I called for a drought on the land and the mountains, on the grain and the new wine and the oil, on whatever the ground brings forth, on men and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands.”

Did you catch the part where God says He called for the drought?

God uses hard times, times of delayed answers, times of increased fire, to draw us to Him.

Our world is consumed with a “ME, ME, Me” mentality, and it IS spilling into our churches.

A popular sermon topic is sowing seed and reaping the blessings. That ‘s a great sermon.  Very motivating.

But often what seems to be forgotten is Matt 6:33- seeking God FIRST.

God wants to be CENTER of ALL we do. Not the left overs, not an afterthought, not something we check off a to-do list.

We (I) need to be more concerned with building HIS Kingdom than in maintaining/building our own.

One thing that can help us remain focused on God’s Kingdom and will for our lives, is remembering we are daily in Spiritual Warfare.

As much as God wants to draw us closer to Him, and use us for His glory, satan DOESN’T want it. (please tweet)

Satan will use every trick in the book to distract us from building God’s Kingdom and investing in others lives. And our flesh is a weakness he hits with full force.

God wants us to enjoy this world. It’s why He gave us such variety of scenery, talents, and desires.

However, everything we are should be grounded in Christ. He should be the center spoke that directs all our daily activities. (tweet please)

Sadly, He’s often not.

That’s why Haggi is in the Bible.

We all get side tracked on building our own kingdoms and neglect God’s.

God’s Word is here to guide us back to Him.

So are trials.

Haggi 2:17a says, “I struck you with blight and mildew and hail in all the labors of your hands…”

God designs trials to draw us closer.

Satan means them to move us farther from our Creator.

The choice in movement is up to each of us.

What move will you chose?

It Matters To God...So It Should Matter To You

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
 In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV

This passage has plagued me through most of 2013.

What does acknowledging God in ALL my ways mean?

 After much prayer, I’ve come to realize it means I should seek God in EVERY decision I make…Large and Small. It’s acknowledging that I NEED God every moment, of every day. I can’t produce my next breath, so it’s arrogant and erroneous to think I can make ANY decision without consulting Him first. It’s about realizing I NEED God more than I can humanly understand. It’s about putting God FIRST. (Matt 6:33)

So how does this play out in my day-to-day life?

Here are some of my common thoughts on any given day:

Lord, should I purchase XYZ? Should I go to the gym today or spend more time in Your Word? Should I say something to my husband about XYZ or wait another day for You to work? Do you want me to call XYZ now? Is today a good day to start XYZ project? Do I blog today? What book should I read next? Should I eat another cookie? And so on….

I’ll admit, some of this sounds trivial. But I’m coming to realize how much God WANTS to be part of each trivial thing in my life. I’m blown away by the guidance He gives when I consult Him.

More than once, He’s led me to go to the store on a day I hadn’t planned and He’s blessed me in some way: huge savings on items or meeting someone who needed prayer.

Not only that, I’m amazed to see how things “fall” into place when I let go and wait for God to work instead of me pushing my way ahead- forcing issues.

On top of all this, when I acknowledge my need for God, my heart and mind are filled with peace. I have confidence in knowing God is working in ways I can’t see. I have assurance that He loves me and will never let me go.

Realizing all this should mean I’m a pro at consulting God, acknowledging Him in minute situations, and even have a heart filled with endless praise…but I’m human. So I mess up. Daily.

This point was driven home by Sorge, “It’s possible to remain loyal in our love for the Lord but still miss His highest purposes for our life.” (pg 133) OUCH!

No matter how many steps forward I take in my walk with God, I always fall back. Sometimes I only fall a step or two, other times I tumble head-over-feet and land with a huge thud. But no matter what, God is with me and He is able to use each step (forward or back) to draw me closer to Him and His purpose for my life.  (please tweet)

The key is being willing to go back to Him. To acknowledge Him. Acknowledge His work in my life. Acknowledge His blessings. Acknowledge He is the giver and sustainer of life. Acknowledge His grace, kindness, mercy, forgiveness, power…and His plan.

Acknowledge HE IS GOD and I am NOT!

In Chapter 9 of “The Fire of Delayed Answers”, Sorge shows us how Hezekiah blew it.

There’s much to learn in this chapter, but what stood out for me regards Hezekiah’s Spiritual Pride. It brought me back to me learning how to Acknowledge God in ALL my ways.

“Hezekiah wasn’t refusing to consult God about showing his kingdom to the Babylonians. It was just an oversight—he didn’t think it mattered. It wasn’t a big deal at all to Hezekiah. But it was to God.” (pg 137)

All things in our lives matter to God. Just like everything that happens in my sons life matters to me.
God WANTS to be involved in ALL things. Nothing is too trivial for His attention.

You aren’t trivial to Him.

Every decision you make matters to God. (please tweet)

So next time you face a decision (should I eat a burger or grilled chicken? should I marry this person? is this the job God has for me?), consult God. Acknowledge that He wants to be part of it all.

It matters to Him…so it should matter to you.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

I pray you all have a Very Merry CHRISTmas.

Enjoy your family.

Stop stressing.

Celebrate Christ.

Pray for God's will for 2014.

I'll be back Monday, January 6th.

"If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth." 1 John 1:6 NIV

Not your usual Christmas scripture!

I hope you will take the time to ask God to shine His light on your heart, your motivation, your plans and your intentions. Are you walking in the LIGHT or dancing in the shadows?

What does Christmas mean to you?

What does following Christ look like in your life?

Does God have to bend to your will or do you bend to His?

Are you more concerned with building your own kingdom here on earth or about building His kingdom eternal?

Just some thoughts to leave you with.

Merry CHRISTmas!
